Does The Number of Home Page Posts Matter? YES!

Posted by Paul B | September 9, 2007 .

Ever since I increased the number of posts on my home page to 14 I’ve been keeping a careful eye on the amount of search traffic brought here by Google. When I first set it down to 7 it stood out that within 2 or 3 days that all search traffic has gone. To be fair I don’t think that it is so much the amount of posts on your home page but rather the length of time that each post appears there that matters. For a blog like mine that I try and update every day then 14 posts (or 2 weeks) seems to have helped get that search traffic back. Of course there may have been other influences as well but the way in which I can coincide the search traffic going and coming back is way to strong to ignore.

Want to see what the difference has been, then here’s the graph from Google analytics showing Google search traffic:-

This is pretty interesting and I think you can certainly say that even if there are “other influences”, it certainly seems that leaving the posts on your homepage for longer has a big effect.

My next question would be - if I’m posting multiple times per day, what do I do? Should someone be showing 28 posts on their homepage, if they post twice per day?

My gut feeling is to say go without whatever keeps your content there for 2 weeks or more. Then again it all depends on the nature of your blog and the type of posts you make? If you’re an image intensive blogger then obviously that is going to impact seriously on your load time and turn visitors away. However, if your posts are mainly text then you should be ok, even a 56K modem can download a lot of text per second.

I totaly agree with you . Yes it does matter. I was away the other week and did not get the opportunity to post an articles for one week and my traffice just went to zero for a couple of days. It bad, very bad. Then I posted a numbers of articles and slowly it went up again.
