My First Real Spammer

Posted by Paul B | August 20, 2007 .

I almost feel like I’m getting somewhere with this blogging lark this morning. After a couple of weeks writing I’ve finally got my first comment spammer and boy is he a clever one!

I almost fell for his first comment about not understanding one of my posts (I do sometimes wonder about my mind and writing wandering) and let it through the filter. Then I found another 12 comments all appearing to come from the same spam bot. Looks like he’s trying to link to a lot of websites, unfortunately for him all of the ones I’ve found reside on the same server IP. It would be very easy to launch a DOS attack if you were that way inclined and take down this ass holes sites but I’m just not mean enough for that sort of thing. As things stand I’ll just let Askimet take care of it. Just curious, but how often do the rest of you review your Askimet caught spam? I had a few real comments sat there as well so I guess once a week isn’t enough?

Oh, almost forgot, I’ve finally got around to posting my picture on the about page. If you want to see what an ugly git I really am then now’s your chance.

I got hit by the same one. “Great post but I don’t understand…yada yada yada”. I would’ve gotten fooled if I hadn’t noticed nearly identical posts

I check everything Akismet catches. Even the comments with 700 links to drug sites.

I had that happen to my site as well. The person said that they didn’t understand something in one of my articles and asked if I could clarify it.

There were two things that tipped me off though. The first was that he used the title of the post in the comment. I thought this was weird because most “humans” wouldn’t include the title because it’s obvious if your leaving a comment in the post you had a question about.

The second thing that tipped me off was that the same person (same IP address) left exactly the same comment in another post of mine except this time left a link at the bottom to a drug site.

Wait till you start getting 500+ comments a day ;)
