Every now and then it’s good to have a clear out especially if like me you end up collecting domain names that you never do anything with. We all do it don’t we? Have a great idea, buy the domain, 9 months later when you get your domain expiry reminder remember that you haven’t done anything with it. It’s at this point that you normally have 3 options

  1. Renew the domain, be good and actually build something (very rare!)
  2. Renew the domain, promise this year will be the year and do nothing (the norm)
  3. Let the domain expire, yeah but what if…..

Seeing as how the first option was always such a rarity for me I set about finding a fourth option, Sedo was it. Sedo allow you to park domains on their servers, during which they’ll show adverts related to your domain and you get a percentage (they pay me in Euros which is nice with the USD rates all over the place at the moment). It a good way of getting some return back on a domain that you’ve got no intention of doing anything with.

The other thing that they do is let you sell your domains. You just list whatever domains you’d like to sell and they take care of the rest, for us lazy types it makes it ideal. This is great especially if you’ve got one of those domain names that you just know is going to be a great business idea but you’ll just never get around to doing it yourself. Renew, park and try and sell. Obviously if you’ve bought a stupid domain name on a whim then it might be best just to park it until it expires but at least be parking it at Sedo you stand a chance of getting something back.

You Get Out What You Put In

A great lesson to learn in life as well as Sedo! Although it’s very easy to list your domain for sale with Sedo, the chances of it selling (and at a higher price) increase substantially if you put a little effort into actually promoting the fact you’re selling a domain. I had domains parked for a year with no sales, I was getting a bit grumpy until I woke up to myself and realised that I wasn’t actually doing anything to let anybody know I was selling them! After sticking an advert up on a related site I got a sale within a month. The amount was hardly earth shattering but for a domain that only cost me $7 to register it was a nice return.

I’m still a very active Sedo user, in fact I’ve got domains listed with them right now. They all still receive some amount of traffic. If anybody’s interested in any of the following then just sign up and make me an offer:-
