Why I Love That Nobody Believes In SEO Anymore

Posted by Paul B | June 17, 2008 .

I gave up promoting my SEO services to people around a year ago, basically it became too much of a hard sell and I didn’t need the hassle. Clients always wanted “guaranteed” number 1 spots, or guaranteed traffic, or guaranteed sales. That’s not the way SEO works. It’s because there are no guarantees and because people like Shoemoney have turned the very term SEO into a dirty word that belief in what SEO is is at an all time low. SEO, it’s all a short term con isn’t it? Doesn’t work does it? It’s a bunch of con artists selling smoke? Now that I’m not interested in selling my SEO knowledge but more interested in making money from it myself the more people that believe that the better!

You see, why let the truth get in the way of an a-listers link bait? The more people who believe that Stumble and social networking is all that matters in Web 2.0/3.0 or whatever, that can’t be bothered with the basics of SEO technique the better. I don’t want you competing with me using the techniques I use. Because by doing things right, by actually USING the techniques that are in the SEO Book and published in numerous places online SEO can still be a very effective skill. How effective?

The chart below is from a single new deep page on an existing PR3 home page website. I have done no link building other than creating an internal linking structure that will help the page. The content is optimised to within an inch of it’s life for 2 search phrases that I thought would bring nice amounts of traffic. The page was uploaded on June the 6th.

page views from a single optimised page

Yesterday, June the 16th that single page received over 12,000 page views from over 7,000 unique visitors. Over 95% of that traffic was US/UK based and delivered via Google, Yahoo and MSN. Excellent traffic to turn into income.

That’s why I don’t give a shit that people don’t believe in SEO as a skill, because it allows me to do things like that. Sure I do a lot of reading, it takes a lot of my time keeping up to date and sure there are no guarantees….but to say it doesn’t work, well please just keep on telling people that!

Yeah, it drew more traffic than I thought it would. My process is very simple though
    1. Lots of keyword research to narrow down to the best prospects
    2. Optimise the page to the very best standards
    3. Create an internal structure to help the new content (not just for search engines but for visitors as well)

I did no link building for that page, some of those existing website visitors found it, linked to it and within a few days I was number 1 for my target phrases, above the BBC and everybody else who was running a similar story but not optimised.

I would never pretend it works like this all the time but at least 3-4 times a month I hit a good one :)

Don’t forget I did a post a while back about the Keyword Research tools that I use :)

I’m also quite heavily into Google Trends at the moment.

Great Paul B!! It was time that someone says what is right!

Just let other people think what they want…
Will be better for the rest of us.

    Nice tips too. Thanks.

    Gracias por la información.

    Paul,

What site or information would your recommend to those of us who DO want to use SEO? I believe I downloaded SEO Book but haven’t read it yet. Would that be a good start?

Thanks for your informative blog. Keep it up as it helps us learn and grow.

The actual key to SEO is to put it into practice. Don’t just read about it but actually do it! How many of us buy/download things read them and then never actually apply the knowledge? The SEO Book is a great place to start.
